NSA & gchq pRIVACY VIOLATION
Blog 1: U.S NSA Phone/Computer surveillance
The National Security Agency was ordered by president bush in 2002 to monitor many devices that belong to the American people. Spying on the residents of the United states without a warrant is somewhat unconstitutional. with this order people were allowed to view phone calls, e-mails, and text messages. This issue tends to recur. This is a problem because according to the 4th amendment, it is illegal.
One of the key reasons to the surveillance program was the attack on September 11, 2001. The US monitered the activity of about 1,000 people in the US believed to be associated with Al-Queda. Around this time the NSA surveillance program could have stopped 9/11 according to the FBI. The NSA believes it is a defense method against cyberattacks according to U.S. officials.
Believe it or not, this type of surveillance is dangerous. The fourth amendment protects citizens of the United states from unreasonable search and seizure without a warrant. It is the citizens job to challenge these secret agencies when they are discovered because of this unlawful surveillance.

Blog 2: GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY TO MONITOR AMERICANS
The government would not be able to monitor Americans the way it has been if 9/11 never happened. There was an act called the patriot act signed by the name of the "patriot act" 45 days later. This act allowed Government spying to become a lot easier. This bill puts Americans at unease knowing that their credit cards and banking reports, and spying on innocent people over social media.
There could be reason to believe the patriot act is not such a bad thing. it sparks debate when it comes to amendment talk. This could be a good thing. to most Americans the look at it as the government phone tapping just about anyone with a phone, and this is not the case. The governments intentions behind this was to protect the citizens of America.
In conclusion, the American government monitoring Americans is also not a good thing. Monitoring the American people is not acceptable, however it is a must when there is suspicious activity. The NSA may be abusing their power by doing things like wire taping innocent people. without warrant the American people will believe it is unconstitutional for the government to do such things.

Blog 3: USA SPYING ON POSIBLE TERRORISTS IN OTHER COUNTRIES
President Obama has ensured constitutional protections that restrict a lot of the warrantless surveillance that the NSA has been carrying out. this would be effective throughout the rest of the world. the extension may not effect the U.S. citizens but it may have effect on the billions of people in Europe.
This idea is risky for the united states. spying on other governments can cause tension across the globe. The actions that the Government is taking may throw away trust from other countries.
The NSA should gather information on other countries because their could be things we don't know that we should. the secrets that would be exposed might benefit our national security. There are not many governments across the world that are honest.

Blog 4: GCHQ SPYING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The British government agency (GCHQ) have been using social media platforms such as facebook, twitter, and Instagram to monitor the activities of the British people. The UK released one of the most extreme internet surveillance programs, even more extreme than the united states. They have the most powerful surveillance in the western hemisphere.
The method that the GCHQ prefers is similar to the NSA's Bulk data collection. Gathering the information and records from phone calls and wire tapping in mass amounts is considered unlawful and unfair. They passed the "investigatory powers act" allowing them to collect as much data as they do, all of this in attempt to stop terrorism.
This is a problem because before they even passed the bill they had been unlawfully collecting data for almost 20 years. The twist to the power that the government has over the surveillance is that the police has authority to it as well. The wrongdoing of this is that they can hack anyone for any reason without warrant.

log 5: THE NSA MONITORING INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS MAY OR MAY NOT TARGET FOREIGNERS
The NSA surveillance went in a different direction when they were granted permission to spy on foreigners who may or may not be involved in acts of terrorism. This may not be a bad thing but the orders they were given only allowed them to monitor 42 people who could have been involved. The NSA only received orders from the government for 42 numbers but managed to monitor 151 million calls.
.
There is no secret that our government continues to spy on international citizens, and foreigners that come to the U.S. monitoring these people may not do much because spying on possible terrorists leads to spying on mass populations in bulk. There no reason that more than enough people are monitored just because they are from another country or do not have full citizenship.
There is reason to believe spying on millions of people may provide better protection. To catch terrorists it may take monitoring whole populations to find the "bad actors." The only problem is that they do not have probable cause to do such things. If they followed the police guidelines by getting warrants their wouldn't be such a strain as there is now.

Log 6: NSA Activities
Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor played a big role in leaking the information of the NSA. He had been collecting classified information of the NSA. He found some of the surveillance disturbing, and he chose to take action. When this happened Snowden fled to Hong Kong, China. He violated the espionage act so he had to seek asylum in Russia.
The fact that Snowden took such a huge risk, shows that he was aware something had to be done to shine a light on this injustice. there should be more people like him that are willing to leak information regarding the higher powers such as the NSA. This information allows Americans to see what is going on behind the scenes. Americans blindly let these government agencies get away with these disturbing surveillance tactics.
People would know less about the documents and spying techniques used by the NSA if it were not for Snowden doing what he did. Snowden sacrificed his life to make sure the agency could not keep violating privacy. it is our job as Americans to take similar steps that he has. We have to be able to die for our rights and freedoms that the constitution guarantees us.

Log 7: the impact mass surveillance has on the economy
The privacy violation may not be the only issue that the government is having. The method of spying used by the government has hurt the U.S. government. The economy has lost potential trade partners due to the spying done on other countries. They have been using major telephone companies such as AT&T as an outlet to spy on foreign telecommunications.
The Surveillance method used has dropped the sales of AT&T to a low. Companies like these and Verizon will make less profit because of these agencies violating the people's rights. The blame should be put on the internet company for allowing the NSA to tap into the millions of innocent people's internet communications.
The DEA and CIA both participated in separate programs for surveillance. The companies are losing money because they are not notifying the people that they will be monitored. If these major businesses would put a notice or a warning on their websites they would not lose as much profit as they are losing.

Log 8: GCHQ Terrorist group platform
The leader of the GCHQ, Robert Hannigan is unhappy about the terrorist groups that use social media as a platform. For example, the extremist group Islamic State uses twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp for promotion of their organization. These groups more often use these platmforms to spread their message. They use hostages on social media to send messages as well. The fact that terrorist groups can get their message across so easily, shows that anyone can be a terrorist, a phrase that is very relevant.
The terrorists can use these platforms to recruit other people who may be living in targeted countries. they have access o anyone on social media now. the government having this kind of opportunity to see terrorist activity through the internet opens a huge window. Te window starts with the little things, like being able to see followers and potential recruits. The government then puts a target on the supporters of the terrorist groups.
These videos confirm the suspicion that the GCHQ may have. These are the people that need to watch instead of innocent people. such horrible acts are put onto the internet on websites like Youtube. google claims to have a "zero tolerance" for videos as graphic as some of them are, but with all of the videos being uploaded every day it would be hard to monitor all of the content put out unless it goes viral. The GCHQ plans for Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Apple to use better encryption services. there would be no problems for this method if it is used properly.

Log 9: NSA funding for GCHQ
When Edward Snowden released the documents about the NSA he also released a specific one that talked mentions the NSA paying at least 100m pounds towards gaining access towards the British intelligence gaining programs. The Americans did this in expect for a return in currency. The Largest intelligence agency in Britain being controlled by the US government is a bad thought because they are completely dependent on another agency.
These two organizations working together may be worse than the US. both countries plan on developing techniques for mass harvesting and analysis or internet traffic. This issue becomes worldwide as soon as America begins taking steps like this. It is a disaster bound to happen. The GCHQ is spending their money on gathering peoples information but this is a waste of money and different methods should be taken to exploit internet trafficking.
The NSA is more efficient than the GCHQ on their own network. 60% of the intelligence comes from the NSA. This is a problem because Britain now blames China and Russia for cyberattacks. this could lead to a potential cyber warfare between the countries. Participating in alliances like these are unhealthy. spying on other countries cannot end well, even with permission.

Log 10: What Americans think about the surveillance program.
Most Americans believe there are no necessary limits to what the government may see when they collect the data in bulk. Over half of America(50%) do not approve the way that the NSA collects telephone records and other data on the internet. A shocking 42% of America believe it may help. This number is over a third of the country.
The Majority of Americans think of it as too much to give up our civil liberties and rights only to catch terrorists. That may be a bad idea because terrorist may not only move on the social media platform. The people think that the anti terrorism policies have not gone far enough to protect our country. American people want to feel like they can control most of their personal information but the NSA makes this very difficult.
Now that most Americans know about the surveillance programs they are less likely to disclose certain information. The behavior of the people has changed. The people do not agree with the spying on foreign leaders either. Spying on foreign leaders and countries will lead to tension between us and those other countries.
